🥫 Drive Out Hunger: Our September Food Drive with Move For Hunger-image

September is Hunger Action Month , a nationwide initiative designed to raise awareness and take action against food insecurity across North America. This year, Park Triangle is, once again, proud to step up alongside our multifamily community partner, Move For Hunger , to host an on-site food drive running the entire month of September!   Participating couldn't be any simpler, and every single item contributed goes directly to local D.C. food banks to help families in need.   🎒 How to Participate:   Grab a Bag: Stop by the front desk to pick up an official donation bag from the concierge, or feel free to use any spare grocery bag you have at home. Fill It Up: Clean out the unopened non-perishables from your pantry or pick up extra non-perishable items during your weekend grocery run. Return to the Concierge: Drop your filled bag right back off at the concierge desk before September 30th. Move For Hunger’s local transportation network will handle the pickup and deliver the food straight to local families.   📦 Most Needed Items by Food Banks:   To ensure your donations make the biggest impact possible, food banks generally request highly nutritious, shelf-stable items. Please try to avoid glass containers , as they can easily break during transit:   Canned proteins (Tuna, salmon, chicken—ideally with pull-tabs so a can opener isn't required) Peanut butter and nut butters (plastic jars) Whole grain pasta , brown rice, and quinoa Canned beans , soups, and stews (try to find pull tops to avoid the need for a can opener) Unsweetened breakfast cereals and oatmeal   🚛 The Story Behind Move For Hunger:   Move For Hunger was founded in 2009 by Adam Lowy. His family had operated a professional moving company for generations, and he consistently noticed a troubling trend: when families packed up their lives to relocate, massive amounts of perfectly good, unopened non-perishable food items were left behind in pantries or tossed straight into the trash.   Adam realized that if he simply asked moving clients if they’d like to donate that food instead of discarding it, he could redirect thousands of pounds of meals to local pantries. What began as a simple conversation with customers has grown into a massive national movement. Today, Move For Hunger coordinates with over 1,200 moving companies and thousands of apartment communities across the United States and Canada, having successfully delivered over 90 million pounds of food to local food banks.   Let's show the strength of our Columbia Heights community this September. Grab a bag today and help us make a massive difference!
